Popular Hanover restaurant announces closing
Downtown Hanover restaurant McAllister’s on York announced in a Facebook post it is closing on Saturday, Aug. 31.
“Andrew D’Agenais and Robert Godfrey want to thank our staff, family, Guests and friends for the almost 3 years we have had the pleasure of operating McAllister’s on York,” the co-owners said on Facebook. “We have met so many lovely people and appreciate all those that have been our supporters. We have some life events that need to be a priority, and we need to step away. Saturday August 31st will be our last day open, and McAllister’s on York will be closed permanently. We hope to see you all before we close.”
D’Agenais and Godfrey added in their post that annual events held by the business, including “Costumes and Cocktails Crawl” on Oct. 19 and the “Santa Crawl”, “will still happen.”
Described in published reports as a popular upscale restaurant, McAllister’s on York is located at 11 York St. The establishment features a rooftop bar, BarE11even.
According to the restaurant’s website, Richard McAllister established Hanover when he purchased 217 acres from John Digges in 1745. The Richard McAllister Hotel was built in the 1920s but abandoned in the 1980s. In 1999, the hotel was renovated and converted into 34 apartments.
In 2019 local developer Jordan Ilyes purchased the building and approached D’Agenais and Godfrey, the owners of The Handsome Cab at 106 N George St. in York, about opening a restaurant on the first and second floor of the establishment.
McAllister’s on York opened in November 2021 following an extensive renovation to the building. The restaurant was temporarily closed in 2023 following a car accident involving the front of the establishment.
