Elisabeth Kunkel approaches nine years as chief medical officer of the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute (a Penn State Health enterprise).
For Kunkel, change management of the day remains complex, though achievable. “We’re grappling with tough decisions while supporting healthcare workers through times of uncertainty,” she said. In 2026, Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute will be moving into several additional locations, and the integration of their facility to new locations requires numerous decisions and planning meetings. “Support for patients through the changing landscape is critical,” said Kunkel.
Moreover, Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute looks forward to changing its electronic health record system in 2026. “Supporting the healthcare workers through multiple facility moves and the upcoming EHR change is a full-time effort,” said Kunkel. “Providing a safe space for faculty to air their concerns is of paramount importance. Ongoing support for faculty development and advancement contributes to a meaningful work environment.”
