Downtown Inc in again received a 2026 Main Street America accreditation, recognizing its excellence in community revitalization.

The accreditation is the highest level of recognition awarded by Main Street America for preservation-based economic development and community revitalization. It’s the second straight year Downtown Inc has received the accreditation.

“We are proud to recognize Downtown Inc as a 2026 Accredited for its unwavering commitment to grassroots transformation and the extraordinary abilities of its staff, board of directors, and volunteers to respond to the needs of the York community,” Main Street America President and CEO Erin Barnes said in a statement. “Downtown Inc demonstrates a dedication to investing in the people and places that make special and contribute to the collective power of the Main Street movement to build vibrant spaces and durable economies.”

Along with national accreditation, Downtown Inc will be recognized as an Accredited Program by the Downtown Center at their annual conference later this month. The recognition affirms that the organization meets state and national standards for downtown revitalization, organizational effectiveness, and measurable community impact.

Main Street America and its partners evaluate programs every year based on their ability to advance community transformation through the Main Street Approach, a nationally recognized framework for economic vitality, design, promotion, and organization.

According to a release, Downtown Inc is one of 838 nationally recognized Accredited Main Street America programs and part of a network of more than 1,600 communities nationwide working to strengthen older and historic commercial districts.

“This recognition reflects the incredible partnerships, persistence, and pride that define Downtown York,” Downtown Inc Director Sarah O’Brien. “Receiving Main Street America accreditation for a second consecutive year is especially meaningful because it demonstrates that the progress we’re seeing downtown is not accidental…it’s intentional, collaborative, and sustainable. From our and property owners to our volunteers, board members, local government, and community partners, this accreditation belongs to everyone who continues to believe in York’s future.”

To qualify for accredited status, communities must demonstrate exceptional performance across six areas: broad-based community commitment to revitalization, inclusive leadership, sustainable operations, strategy-driven programming, preservation-based economic development, and documented impact, per the release.

Over the past year, Downtown Inc has built on Downtown York’s momentum through strategic investments and community partnerships through the following:

  • Leveraging over $1.2 million in direct investment to support downtown initiatives and placemaking efforts;
  • Welcoming more than 5 million visitors annually to Downtown York’s businesses, attractions, and events;
  • Supporting and small businesses through , technical assistance, and targeted recruitment efforts such as the Imagine the Possibilities vacant property marketing campaign;
  • Maintaining Downtown York’s reputation as a clean, safe, and welcoming destination through the work of the Clean and Green Team, which has removed more than 22,000 pounds of litter and addressed over 150 instances of graffiti in recent years;
  • Advancing quality-of-life initiatives including public art planning, urban forestry projects, walkability improvements, and neighborhood beautification efforts.

Main Street America recognizes two tiers of national designation—Accredited and Affiliate. Accredited status serves as a badge of excellence, signaling to residents, investors, owners, and funders that a local Main Street program has demonstrated a proven ability to generate meaningful economic and community impact.

In 2025, Main Street America programs generated $9.4 billion in local reinvestment, supported 6,936 net new businesses, facilitated the creation of 36,549 net new jobs, rehabilitated 10,623 historic buildings, and leveraged 1.8 million volunteer hours nationwide.
