CB Construction Services Inc has been in business for 12 years and employs 19 staff members.
“Prior to the formation of CB Construction, Carl [Barker] had a strong desire to be his own boss and do things differently than his current employer. He had been doing side projects for a few years before forming CB, but just couldn’t leave the security of a paid position,” the company stated. “With encouragement from self-employed friends, he finally took the leap of faith when the economy was rebounding after the 2008 crash and he had too much work to continue only has side projects.”
While Barker enjoyed working in the field, he was ready to transition out of completing administrative and human resources tasks.
According to the company, “Carl’s wife, Denise, started helping with the business, both in the office and in the field. The company was eventually restructured and Denise took leadership of the company because of her education and background in business and mental health, making her a good fit as President, handling HR, Accounting and Business Development.”
Presently, six family members are involved in the business, holding positions of President; Vice President; Vice President of Operations; Accounting Administrator; Equipment Manager; Administrative Assistant.
“We have begun preparation to transition ownership to the next generation of family members in the coming years,” the company stated. “We feel transitioning the ownership to the next generation will be a pivot that we feel is necessary for the younger generations to connect and work together with the older, more experienced team members.”
CB Construction Services Inc aims to contribute to the growing need for workforce development by being active in Cumberland-Perry Area Career and Technical Center and Carlisle High School’s Center for Career Technology.
