10 essentials to pack when going to the beach

Listen to this article

Summer is in full swing, which means it’s time to head to the beach.

But what exactly should you be packing in your bag when it’s time to unload and make the trek through the sand?

Take a look at some of the essentials you’ll need to make sure your family has everything they need for a day at the beach:

Water—and lots of it

Something that can easily be forgotten, considering you’ll be swimming in the water for a majority of the day. However, the heat can cause dehydration very quickly. Pack enough water bottles for everyone to make sure no one is thirsty.

Sunscreen

Applying sunscreen just once is not enough. Have plenty of it to go around so that no one is complaining of sunburn later on. Take note of the SPF when buying and find one that is good for you.

Blanket

Towels are great to dry off after taking a dip in the ocean, but blankets work much better to lay down on in the sand. They’re usually larger and heavier than a towel and will stay dry.

Baby powder

The worst part about a day of the beach is getting back into the car, only to bring have the beach with you. Sprinkling baby powder on your sandy feet will make the sand all come off easily.

First aid kit

There may be soft sand on the ground, but you never know what can happen. Better to be safe than sorry.

Book or magazine

Anything to keep yourself or your kids entertained while relaxing.

Radio

Sit back and listen to some tunes. Find an old-fashioned radio or pick a newer model and plug in your mp3 player.

Snacks

If you’re spending a full day at the beach, it’s a good idea to pack lunch in a cooler. But a few snack bars in your bag wouldn’t hurt either.

Lip balm

Unlike sunscreen, lip balm is easily forgotten. Although burned lips can hurt just as bad as anywhere else. Make sure to protect them.

Hat and sunglasses

Keep the sun off your head and out of your eyes.
