Theatre Harrisburg, one of the oldest continually operating community theaters in the country, said on Tuesday that it hired its newest executive director.

Lorien Reese Mahay, former associate director for the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science in Stony Brook, New York, is set to take on her new role Oct. 4.

Mahay joins Theatre Harrisburg after the Harrisburg-based theater held a national search for new leadership.

“We were searching for an inspiring, dynamic leader to guide Theatre Harrisburg into the future and Lorien was everything we were hoping for,” says Becky Mease, Theatre Harrisburg Board Chair. “We are thrilled to have Lorien bring her breadth of experience to our team, and optimistic for the future of Theatre Harrisburg with her at the helm.”

As associate director at Alan Alda, Mahay oversaw over 500 trainings for researchers using improv techniques and led initiatives in curriculum development and strategic training. She has also served as associate director of development at Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor, New York, and program director at the Watermill Center.

“I am excited and deeply honored to be named as the next Executive Director of Theatre Harrisburg. I believe that theatre is most vital when it is the heart of a community, and I am proud to lead an organization that is dedicated to putting their community at the center of everything it does,” said Mahay. “I look forward to joining the Theatre Harrisburg family as we build upon the rich legacy begun nearly 100 years ago and look towards the future of this vibrant flagship arts organization.”

Theatre Harrisburg opened in 1926 and currently holds its productions at Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts and Jay and Nancy Krevsky Production Center, both in Harrisburg.
