Benjamin C. Dunlap Jr. was a partner at Nauman Smith from 1998 until the firm merged with Cohen Seglias in February of 2024, he said.

“I have continued as a partner since then, totaling 27 years,” he said.

As a partner, Dunlap said he helps businesses and railroads resolve legal challenges through counseling, negotiation, and litigation.

“My work includes advising on corporate and employment issues, representing railroads in regulatory and property matters, and guiding clients through disputes and strategic transactions.”

Looking back at the successes of the last year, Dunlap said his greatest ones were helping clients resolve problems.

“As a business lawyer, that might mean strategizing the best legal options to protect a company’s future, untangling the complex history of roadway crossings and property responsibilities for our railroad clients, enforcing a business deal, negotiating a leadership exit, or completing a long process to establish a new rail-trail in Allegheny County,” he said. “That satisfaction is what keeps me practicing law.”

When looking at trends, Dunlap said he notices increased regulatory efforts to control client operations.

“This often requires balancing our clients’ business needs with the regulators’ focus on public interest, which can create complex legal and strategic challenges,” he said.
