Headquartered in Carlisle, The Giant Company is a grocer dedicated to delivering value and freshness with kindness to meet the ever-evolving needs of today’s customers while making a difference in local communities.

The Giant Company began in Carlisle in 1923 when David Javitch opened a two-man butcher shop called the Carlisle Meat Market. Javitch built his business on the simple premise of the “best product at the fairest price.” In 1936, he purchased a store in Lewistown and named it the GIANT Food Shopping Center, offering dry goods and perishables under one roof. Today, Giant has 193 stores and more than 35,000 team members.

John Ruane, president, said “As retail grocery has changed over the years, the core elements are still the same in terms of customers wanting what they want, when they want it. The GIANT Company has continued to focus on giving the customer a consistently friendly, fresh experience every time they shop with us, whether that’s in stores or online. We also provide as much value as possible, whether its low prices on everyday items or the convenience of grocery pick-up. We listen and learn from our customers constantly, and we operate with the mindset of a startup with over a century of experience. Every day is a new opportunity to solve the challenges of today’s family using the solid heritage we’ve built over the years to guide us”

He said Giant’s three team promises–grow through new opportunities, be you, and make a difference, along with our core values of care, courage, teamwork, integrity, and humor, guide us day after day. “Keeping these values front and center is how we ensure that every team member feels connected, confident and inspired to be their best every day,” Ruane said.

He said The GIANT Company, gives back to its customers and communities through efforts such as volunteer days, and register roundup campaigns. “By focusing our efforts around eliminating hunger, healing the planet, changing children’s lives, promoting wellbeing and fostering a culture of inclusion, we’re committed to building a better tomorrow for all,” Ruane said.
