Stoudts to continue brewing small batches of beer for its Adamstown restaurant
One of Pennsylvania’s oldest microbreweries will still have a life despite the recent announcement of its closure.
Carol Stoudt, the head brew master and co-owner of Stoudts Brewing Co. in Adamstown, Lancaster County, said this week she plans to continue brewing small batches of its award-winning beer. Several of the brewery’s flagship beers will be offered on tap in the Stoudts Black Angus Restaurant & Pub adjacent to the brewing operations.
Owners Ed and Carol Stoudt announced the impending closing earlier this month, citing Carol’s retirement from the business. Carol Stoudt made international headlines in the late 1980s when she became the first female brew master since Prohibition to run a brewing operation.
But the outpouring of support from customers and friends in the industry after the news of her retirement came out inspired her to begin looking at alternatives to keep her beers alive. She said the original plan for the brewery in 1987 was to only sell the beer in the restaurant, but the production size allowed the brewery to bottle and distribute beers to a wider market.
A two-barrel brewing system will be used at the brewery, Carol said, allowing her to create longtime favorites like the Gold Lager, Pils and Scarlet Lady ESB. She also plans on continuing to brew the Market Alley Ale, which is sold exclusively at the Lancaster Dispensing Co. restaurant in Lancaster.
