Rutter’s
Rutter’s is a privately held chain of convenience stores headquartered in York. The company operates 89 locations in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and West Virginia and has 3,000 employees.
Ancestors of the Rutter family arrived in Philadelphia in 1686. They traveled through Lancaster County and arrived in York in 1747, seeking freedom and farmland. Rutter’s dairy is located on the original family farm, and the convenience store office is on an adjacent farm.
“We are a long-term, family focused set of companies; 11 generations strong and still growing and innovating. We were certified in 2025 as a US Employer of Choice, which represents our appreciation for all the long-term Rutter’s team members that have helped to bring our success,” said Scott Hartman, president and CEO.
He said the convenience store company has won an amazing number of awards for innovation. “We were just recognized for the fourth time as the Food Service Innovator of the Year in the convenience industry {by Convenience Store News}. No other company has won four times. We have also won more industry awards for our customer experience than any other chain in the US,” Hartman said. Additionally, Hartman himself has been named the 2025 CSP Retail Leader of the Year.
Rutter’s gives back to every community the company serves. In 2024 Rutter’s set a new company record of $2.1 million of charitable donations. Over $1 million is raised through the Rutter’s Children’s Charities golf outing each year. “Our charity focus is all on children…. our future,” Hartman said.
He said Rutter’s is constantly trying to stay on the forefront of change, and the company’s culture embraces change. “Generating new ideas has been key to our success and stability. We play to be #1 in everything we do and use our slogan ‘Why Go Anywhere Else’ to validate that we are on track. Wait until you see our new bar/gaming/restaurant concept coming to a convenience store near you. We like to venture where others dare not go,” Hartman said.
