Oak Street Health opens in York with focus on preventative care
A medical practice focused on preventative care primarily for older adults on Medicare opened in York July 12.
Oak Street Health, which opened a center in Lancaster in September, started seeing patients at the York Primary Care Clinic at 1113 Carlisle Road, the 16th Oak Street Health clinic in the state.
“Oak Street Health’s mission is to rebuild health care as it should be and we are passionate about bringing our unique model of care to older adults across the country, especially in areas like Pennsylvania where the population of older adults is growing so quickly,” said Dr. Marisa Gefen, Oak Street Health regional medical director, in an email.
Gefen said Pennsylvania ranked fifth across states when it came to the size of its population aged 65 and older.
“When thinking about new markets, we look at both the density of the Medicare-eligible population and communities that need better access to primary care. We are thrilled to come to York and look forward to meeting new patients and ultimately improving their health outcomes,” she said.
Gefen said the center differs from other primary care providers who operate on a fee-for-service model.
“This means they get paid based on the number of visits, tests, etc., regardless if they maintain or improve your health. It incentivizes them to churn through as many patients as possible. This is why a traditional doctor’s office is so crowded, and it takes so long to get an appointment,” she said.
