Central Pa. hospitals ranked No. 1 in region by U.S. News & World Report

Two Central Pennsylvania hospitals have been ranked No. 1 in their respective regions by U.S. News & World Report.

UPMC Harrisburg and Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital are tops in their regions  for high-quality patient care, according to U.S. News.

UPMC Harrisburg, including UPMC West Shore and UPMC Community Osteopathic under the same license, ranks No. 1 in the Harrisburg Metro area which includes hospitals in Dauphin, Cumberland, and Perry counties. Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is ranked No. 2 in the Harrisburg region.

Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital is U.S. News’ No. 1-ranked hospital in the Lancaster region. It also ranked No. 3 in Pennsylvania among U.S. News’ latest edition of Best Hospitals. UPMC Harrisburg is ranked No. 7 in Pennsylvania, followed by Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center at No. 11, and WellSpan York Hospital at 13th.

U.S. News evaluated nearly 4,500 hospitals across 14 adult specialties and 23 procedures and conditions; only 16% of evaluated hospitals earned a Best Hospitals designation. According to a release, the rankings focused on patient outcomes.

UPMC Harrisburg was ranked as high performing in aortic valve surgery; back surgery (spinal fusion); colon cancer surgery; diabetes; gynecological cancer surgery; heart arrhythmia; heart attack; heart failure; hip fracture; hip replacement; kidney failure; knee replacement; lung cancer surgery; pneumonia; prostate cancer surgery; and stroke.
