Gov. Corbett signs bill banning abortion coverage in insurance marketplace

House Bill 818 garnered 142 yeas and 55 nays in the House of Representatives, then 31 yeas and 19 nays in the Senate. The prohibition applies except to abortions necessary to avert the death of the mother or occasioned by pregnancies caused by rape and incest cases that meet certain requirements.
The new law says nothing “shall prohibit an individual from purchasing optional supplemental abortion coverage provided the individual pays a separate premium for the coverage and obtains the coverage outside of the health insurance exchange.”
The National Congress of State Legislatures said in October that at least 17 states had enacted legislation to restrict coverage for abortion in their insurance exchanges.
