A company that has called York County home for more than 150 years is relocating to the south.

Glatfelter is initiating plans to move the company’s corporate headquarters from 96 S. George St. in downtown York to , N.C. by the middle of this year. The news came tucked inside the company’s fourth quarter and full year 2019 earnings report released last week.

The report indicated that following the sale of its specialty papers unit in October 2018 to Pixelle Specialty Solutions, no longer had any manufacturing presence in York and had reduced its Pennsylvania workforce by more than 90%.

Dante C. Parrini, chairman and CEO of Glatfelter, said despite the move the company will continue to have a presence in York.

“Since the Company’s founding, Glatfelter has had a long and rich tradition in York County and benefited from the positive impact on our history, culture and people,” Parrini said in the report. “We also value the strong relationships we have built with our local communities and business partners over the years and will continue to operate a satellite office in York to facilitate a more thoughtful and planned transition to our new headquarters.”

Parrini suggested in the report that the headquarters move to a larger metropolitan area was part of the “ongoing transformation” of Glatfelter, and being in Charlotte gave greater access to transportation like as well as a bigger talent pool for employees for future growth.

Glatfelter is a global supplier of engineered materials that has been in York County since its founding in 1864. The company’s annualized net sales are approximately $950 million. It has customers in more than 100 countries and approximately 2,600 employees worldwide.
