Former Pennsylvania Gov. George Leader and his wife, Mary Jane, co-founded Country Meadows Retirement Communities 43 years ago with a mission to challenge prevailing attitudes toward senior care and offer residents a genuine sense of purpose and community. Headquartered in Hershey, the three-generation, family-owned company now operates eight campuses in Pennsylvania and one in Maryland, employing 2,150 people across its Independent Living, Personal Care, Memory Care and Restorative Care programs.
From its earliest days, Country Meadows worked to counter the perception that retirement communities were simply custodial facilities. The Leader family’s approach centered on engagement rather than passive care — residents are encouraged “to stay engaged, to contribute and to find purpose in every day,” the company stated.
Seven family members remain active in the business across two generations. G. Michael Leader serves as executive chairman and Jane Janeczek as company director in the second generation, alongside CFO Emeritus Theodore Janeczek. The third generation is led by President and Chief Executive Officer Meredith Mills.
