Contractor to begin installing West Shore bridge beams as part of $7.8M project

Listen to this articleThe state Department of Transportation on Wednesday announced that its contractor, J.D. Eckman Inc., is scheduled to start setting beams Thursday night on the west side of the Erford Road bridge over the Camp Hill Bypass in Cumberland County.
J.D. Eckman was awarded the nearly $7.8 million contract to replace the superstructure of the steel bridge with a wider bridge that can support two through lanes and a center-turn lane. The existing two-lane, three-span bridge is 66 years old.
Construction of this bridge began last fall and is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year. This portion of Erford Road, which is on the East Pennsboro Township and Wormleysburg line, averages nearly 12,000 vehicles per day, according to PennDOT.
PennDOT said the work this week will focus on setting the new beams and installing bolts as the contractor continues to replace the bridge structure. The department said travel between 9 p.m. Thursday and 6 a.m. Friday could be limited to single-lane restrictions on Erford Road, while short-term traffic stoppages on the Camp Hill Bypass are possible during beam placement.
The bridge project is not expected to restrict travel lanes during the major morning and afternoon commuting times.
PennDOT said work on the east side of the bridge is slated for later this year.
