Capital Region Water will host a public open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 20 for its $27 million energy recovery project.
The ceremony will be held at its Advanced Wastewater Treatment Facility to celebrate the near completion of the Energy Recovery Improvements Project. The project upgrades critical infrastructure to capture biogas, generated during wastewater treatment, and refine it into renewable natural gas for direct injection into the local UGI natural gas system.
According to a release, the energy recovery project represents a step forward in environmental stewardship, climate resilience, and sustainable infrastructure investment in Pennsylvania, literally turning waste into a clean energy source. The upgrades are designed to reduce carbon emissions, support local sustainability, and help keep utility rates stable for customers by generating additional revenue through gas sales and energy credits, per the release.
The open house event will run from 11:00 A.M.-3:00 P.M. at 1051 Elliot Street in Harrisburg.
The public is welcome to join the official ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11:00 A.M. A guided Energy Recovery Tour will begin at 11:30 A.M., and facility tours will be offered at 12:30 P.M. and 1:30 P.M. Interactive informational displays highlighting the project’s impact and the renewable natural gas process will be available for all guests to explore throughout the afternoon.
Attendance is free, and advanced registration is required for those participating in the guided tours.
