Founded first as the non-profit Capital Hospital Service in 1938, it formally became Capital Blue Cross in 1965.
In 1945, Capital became one of the first “Blues” to offer a comprehensive hospitalization package. It launched one of the nation’s first computerized claims systems in 1974. In the past decade, Capital has opened five retail centers that deliver an integrated sales, service, and care model.
“Capital’s promise is to be the most trusted health plan by going the extra mile for our customers and our mission is to improve the health and well-being of our members and the communities in which they live. These commitments demand that we always be forward-thinking, investing in the technology and resources to enhance employers’ experiences, and improve the physical and emotional well-being of our members. These principles shape our business operations and long-term strategic goals,” said Todd Shamash, president and CEO.
He said, “Health care is a competitive, ever-evolving industry, so we focus on staying a step ahead, helping business leaders anticipate what’s coming next. We develop and deliver solutions that address their unique needs and help their employees get the right care when and where they need it. We continue to invest in ways that modernize and simplify the customer experience, so employers with Capital coverage can provide their teams with health plans built upon affordability, accessibility, and quality.”
Shamash said that Capital’s workplace culture is rooted in collaboration, innovation, and development. He added that the company’s employees are its greatest asset. “We rely on team members at all levels to be our eyes and ears in the constant pursuit of better ways to do business. We encourage employees to elevate their ideas and work together to find impactful ways that enhance the customer experience. Our culture is a big reason we have been voted one of the Best Places to work in PA for seven consecutive years,” he said.
Capital Blue Cross said its primary focus is community well-being, specifically in providing health and wellness resources in underserved communities. The company also supports human services, education, and arts and cultural organizations across Central PA and the Lehigh Valley. Shamash said giving back will always be central to Capital’s mission and vision.
“Modernizing for the future and simplifying the customer experience are key to Capital’s ongoing success. Staying on top of our industry requires constant adaptability to ensure we offer the best services at the most affordable price. The health care landscape can be complex and global and local demands can impact employers’ needs. However, business leaders can count on us to cut through the complexity, giving them the guidance they need to offer their employees access to quality, reliable care,” Shamash said.
