retailer NB Liebman, a fixture in the area for more than seven decades, will be shutting its doors for good.

The company’s going-out-of-business sale at its remaining location at 4705 Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg, starts Friday.

“Store closing forever!” NB Liebman’s website announced. “Complete and total !”

“My deepest gratitude to all the people who’ve been part of NB Liebman, from the countless families we served to the wonderful store staff who became part of our family,” owner Charles Liebman said in a release. “I’ve been personally privileged to serve this for more than 50 years of the company’s history.”

Liebman, the 75-year-old second-generation owner, told Home News Now, “Father Time has caught up with me” and that his family long encouraged him to make this step.

He said the final sale at the 50,000-square-foot showroom will run through Memorial Day weekend.

Liebman’s father, Nathan, opened the first store in Harrisburg on Derry Street in 1946. But the family business can trace its roots as far back as 1919, Home News Now reported, when it was started by Nathan’s older siblings, Russian immigrants to the U.S.

The Carlisle Pike showroom is part of a 132,000-square-foot building with an attached warehouse that is drawing interest, particularly from potential buyers in the furniture and self-storage industries, Liebman said.

He told Home News Now the company is coming off a great year, up about 40% over 2020.

“We wanted to go out on a good note, take care of all of our employees, pay all of our suppliers,” Liebman said. “I’ve seen so many retailers over the years under great financial duress at the end. … We’re going to do the exact opposite. We’re going out the best way we can.”
