York College receives record $500k gift for MBA scholarship program

A prominent York family that supported York College of Pennsylvania is continuing its giving by creating the largest gift ever toward a graduate scholarship at the college.

Karen Willman, the wife of the late who died in 2016, pledged $500,000 to create . Dennis Willman served as chairman and CEO of the York Container Co., retiring in 2011. He attended York College when it was known as the York Junior College and graduated in 1965 from Susquehanna University with a degree in marketing and management.

In 2013, York College named the in his honor. He was a trustee of the school for 15 years and earned a Distinguished Alumni Award.

Fellows for the new scholarship will be selected jointly by the dean of the and the vice president of enrollment management. To be eligible, students must carry a 3.0 GPA in their undergraduate career and maintain at least that GPA in graduate studies in pursuit of the MBA. Preference will be given to graduate students from York County, and the first recipient of the fellowship will be named during the 2020-21 academic year.

“Dennis loved York College and worked tirelessly over the years to help in any way he could to make the school what it is today,” said Karen, who currently serves in a campaign leadership role for the school. “Along the way it became a family affair. Coming from a family business of entrepreneurs, I thought the best way to continue his work would be to offer a fellowship in his name so others would have an opportunity to achieve their success in the field of business. My hope is that the end result will be to keep the York business community flourishing.”
