Word FM, a listener-supported Christian radio station, has expanded into Lancaster at 92.5 FM.
In addition to Lancaster, the Harleysville-based station can be heard on nearly two dozen frequencies throughout northwestern Maryland, southcentral Pennsylvania, Bucks County, the Lehigh Valley, and northeastern Pennsylvania. Listeners can also tune in online.
“Word FM is a Christian radio ministry that shares the word through uplifting music and engaging conversations that inspires hearts and strengthens faith,” Executive Director Billy Dunn said in a statement. “We like to say that Word FM is a place ‘where life change happens.’”
Regarding expanding to Lancaster, Dunn said the new station “helped to fill out our listening map,” for listeners traveling from Bucks to Lehigh Valley and west.
According to a release, the station is owned by Four Rivers Broadcasting. Its founder, Charles W. Loughery, also established Radio Delaware Valley and WDVR. Four Rivers is named for the rivers in the regions of the station’s coverage area: Delaware, Lehigh, Schuylkill, and Susquehanna.
Loughery said he’s interested in stations that “naturally expand our coverage area,” and that 92.5 FM, is “in between two portions of our periphery.”
Loughery added that the radio signal is strongest in the central portion of Lancaster County, and that many listeners stream online or listen via cell phone that link to radios in their vehicles, helping to expand the station’s footprint.
Word FM operates solely on contributions from its broad audience. The station will run its on-air fall fundraiser from Sept. 30 through Oct. 3. Listeners can call in their pledge of financial support during that time or donate online. Some folks prefer to sponsor a whole day of music and radio programming.
“Usually, it’s in memory of somebody or in honor of somebody,” Loughery said.
Word FM features a variety of contemporary Christian music, faith-based podcasts, prayer requests, and more. Since 1993, Word FM has operated as a 24-hour Christian radio station featuring contemporary Christian music. The station also offers a variety of family-oriented programs. Word FM is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, non-commercial educational radio station.
