Susquehanna Civil Inc. is a majority (52%) woman-owned multi-service civil engineering and environmental consulting firm specializing in transportation infrastructure improvement projects. The firm, which is based in York, has 80 employees and has been in business 15 years.

President Rosanna Smithnosky said the firm’s unique position in a male-dominated field of civil engineering shapes its views of what it means to be a woman-owned business. “Our goal is to inspire women in this industry through positive examples and create a supportive environment where our team can thrive. We believe in positivity and success for our team, and we all can achieve our dreams through dedication and hard work. We are committed to cultivating a successful environment for all employees.” she said.

As a new president during the pandemic, Smithnosky said challenges involved addressing health and safety while maintaining work and retaining staff. She said, “Having the company’s trust was critical. This was achieved through showing commitment, empathy, and empowering staff to navigate the fluid environment. We have overcome misperceptions of ability through hard work, perseverance, humility, and respect for others. Our challenges as women business owners have been diminished by the successful work of many women before us.”

Susquehanna Civil actively supports and develops women as future leaders; hiring eight women in the past two years and promoting eight women from within. Smithnosky values supporting women in the transportation industry and collaborates with other female leaders.
