Pennsylvania 4th in nation for patient safety; 11 local hospitals earn top marks
Eleven central Pennsylvania hospitals received top grades from the Leap Frog Group, an independent national nonprofit driving a movement for patient safety.
Nationally, the fall 2023 Hospital Safety Grades show hospitals reducing health care-acquired infections (HAIs) post-pandemic after significant increases in infection rates during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Leap Frog Group said. This cycle, nearly 30% of hospitals earned an “A,” 24% earned a “B,” 39% earned a “C,” 7% earned a “D” and less than 1% earned an “F.”
Pennsylvania ranks 4th in the nation, which means it is a state with 44.1% of A hospitals. While ranked the same from the spring cycle, the number of A hospitals slightly decreased from 46.5%
Locally, WellSpan Health‘s Gettysburg, Waynesboro, Ephrata Community, and Good Samaritan hospitals; Lancaster General Hospital; and UPMC‘s Harrisburg, Community, Memorial, Hanover, Carlisle and West Shore hospitals, received an A grade.
“The physicians, nurses and staff members throughout our system remain absolutely devoted to the highest quality care and the highest standards in patient safety,” said Tami Minnier, UPMC’s chief quality and operational excellence officer. “This recognition from The Leapfrog Group reflects that devotion, and every member of our teams should be proud of what they’re providing for our communities — for every patient, every day.”
The new grades are the first to reflect hospital performance post-pandemic, Leap Frog Group said.
