The world’s largest credit union sailed into Central Pennsylvania on Monday.
Navy Federal Credit Union opened its doors at the Carlisle Barracks in North Middleton Township, replacing a Members 1st branch that closed last year. The branch is Navy Federal’s second in Pennsylvania. The other is in Montgomery County.
The credit union serves a range of members associated with the U.S. military, including veterans, contractors and people on active duty, as well as those members’ families. It is the self-proclaimed largest credit union in the world with $81 billion in assets, nearly 7 million members and 14,000 employees.
Most of Navy Federal’s 297 branches are on or near U.S. military bases. The Carlisle Barracks branch is its first on an Army installation in the continental U.S. It will eventually offer financial education classes in addition to banking services.
“We have been grateful for the warm reception we’ve received here,” branch manager Sonia Gunera said in a Navy Federal news release. “From those stationed at the base to their family members and veterans who visit on a regular basis, we’ve been treated like family, and we couldn’t be more excited to be part of the Carlisle Barracks community.”
A grand opening celebration will be held at the branch, located at 842 Sumner Road, on Friday.
