Melanie Walz Scaringi has been an attorney for 24 years and practices in the areas of estate planning, administration and elder law, she said. “I maintain a full caseload, and I also handle about fifty percent of the business management of our firm, including accounting, payroll, benefits, and human resources. I am also a mom to four amazing teenagers,” Walz-Scaringi said.

Over the last year, Walz-Scaringi said she enjoyed working with people to make sure they have Powers of Attorney and Living Wills in case they become incapacitated during their lives, and to make sure they have proper Wills and Trusts in place to carry out their wishes at their deaths.

“I also enjoy assisting families in wrapping up the legal and financial affairs of their loved ones after they have passed. I try to make the estate and trust administration as easy as possible for the family members while they grieve,” she said.

A major trend in her specific practice area is the skyrocketing cost of assisted living, memory care, and skilled care, she said.

“Now that people are living longer, and children are no longer able to take care of their ailing parents in their homes, these costs have skyrocketed,” she said. “Without planning, these costs can completely deplete the family’s wealth in the last few years of a person’s life. Early planning is best, but even crisis planning (planning once the person is already ill or in a facility), is better than not planning at all.”
