But according to retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Brett T. Williams, who was director of operations for the U.S. Cyber Command from 2012 to 2014, it’s not a matter of the money you could gain, but the money you could lose.
Williams was the keynote speaker at Reinsel Kuntz Lesher LLP’s first Manufacturing & Distribution Forum held Tuesday morning at Spooky Nook Sports in East Hempfield Township.
“There is no such thing as ‘cyber war,’” he said. “There is only war. It just happens in cyberspace.”
During his speech, he said the most successful companies in battling cybercrime and data breaches are the ones that align it as part of an overall business strategy with high-level, C-suite executives taking an active role in the process.
Leaving cybersecurity to a company’s information technology team, he said, is no longer enough.
“This is going to become increasingly relevant to your business,” he said.
He also stressed the importance of cyber insurance as a fill-in for the spaces a company can’t occupy in cybersecurity. However, he said premiums are increasing while coverage is decreasing, mostly because the industry still is evolving.
Williams said the basic premise for cybersecurity is the same as it was years ago.
“Assume you are going to get breached, and plan for it,” he said.
