For Lebanon-based Funk Construction, its groundbreaking for Lebanon Steel Works marks the start of a transformative revitalization of an historic site.
“This project is a testament to the power of adaptive reuse and community-focused development,” said Funk Construction President Ken Funk. “We’re honored to help breathe new life into this historic site, creating a space where local makers, artists, and small businesses can thrive.”
A builder and construction manager with more than 85 years of experience working with corporations and institutions throughout the Central Pennsylvania region, Funk Construction specializes in commercial construction, adaptive reuse, design-build, additions, and renovations. The company’s services include preconstruction, design-build, construction, and construction management.
Funk Construction is the partner in the project for developer Common Craft Development. The 30,000-square-foot adaptive reuse project is designed to reinvigorate a historic warehouse at the former Bethlehem Steel complex.
“Lebanon Steel Works is more than a building; it’s a vision for what’s possible when we prioritize community, culture, and creativity,” said Evan Reinhardt, principal, Common Craft Development. “This groundbreaking marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Bethlehem Steel site and for Lebanon’s creative economy.”
Located at 121 Schneider Drive, Lebanon Steel Works will provide affordable, community-focused space for small businesses, artists, and local makers. The development looks to address a significant unmet need in the city, creating a hub where Lebanon’s underground arts community can gather, network, and grow.
A renovation that modernizes the facility while celebrating its industrial character is planned by Funk Construction and Common Craft. By keeping renovation costs efficient, accessible rents will be offered to tenants, ensuring the space for creative small businesses.
Along with providing workspace, Lebanon Steel Works is expected to serve as a cultural resource for the public. The project aims to reconnect residents with the historic Bethlehem Steel site by opening previously closed areas for pop-up markets, retail experiences, and community events.
“We are proud to contribute to this meaningful project for our community,” said Jessica Kosoff, vice president of construction, Funk Construction. “Bethlehem Steel played a defining role in shaping Lebanon, and this vision honors that history while preserving the character upon which the community was built. We are grateful to Common Craft and its many supporters whose commitment and collaboration made this project possible.”
For Funk Construction, the project represents a generational opportunity to chart a path for the larger 100-acre industrial site. By proving that heritage structures can be brought into higher and better uses, the development team seeks to spark future economic growth and reactivate the district into a productive, mixed-use hub.
Lebanon Steel Works was financed in part by a grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Commonwealth Financing Authority, and Department of Community and Economic Development.
