AmeriHealth Mercy becomes AmeriHealth Caritas

According to a news release, the rebranding is the result of the change in ownership announced in August 2011, in which Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan joined Independence Blue Cross as co-owner of AmeriHealth Caritas Family of Companies.
AmeriHealth Caritas Pennsylvania has more than 122,000 Medicaid participants, who will receive new insurance cards in the coming weeks. Their benefits, services, hospitals and providers will not change.
AmeriHealth Caritas, which began in West Philadelphia in 1982, has increased its membership by almost one-third in the past 15 months, now operating in 13 states serving more than 4.7 million Medicaid, Medicare and Children’s Health Insurance Program members through its integrated Medicaid managed care products, pharmaceutical benefit management, behavioral health and other administrative services.
Since January 2012, AmeriHealth Caritas reported doing the following.
- Launched LaCare in Louisiana, which now has more than 154,000 members.
- Launched Arbor Health Plan in Nebraska, which now has more than 22,000 members.
- Won new business as part of the expansion of Pennsylvania’s HealthChoices program, now serving 53 of the state’s 67 counties.
- Won approval for Florida True Health to serve Florida’s Medicaid beneficiaries in Volusia County as Florida TrueBlue in a joint venture with Florida Blue.
- Obtained approval from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to offer Medicare Advantage Special Needs Plans (D-SNPs) to dual-eligible beneficiaries in select counties in Pennsylvania and South Carolina and launched three plans that began enrolling new members on Jan. 1, 2013.
