The new West Manchester Township hospital is nearing its Aug. 18 opening date and UPMC Pinnacle plans to begin transitioning its services to the hospital this week.

The former UPMC Memorial hospital in Spring Garden Township, , is planned to end direct admissions of patients from physicians on Aug. 11 in anticipation of the hospital’s permanent closure the week after.

On Aug. 15, emergency medical and ambulance services will stop taking patients to the hospital’s emergency room and will route patients to other nearby facilities. However, the emergency room will still take walk-in patients until Sunday, Aug. 18.

“Patient safety is our top priority during the transition, and we are committed to completing these final steps without interrupting patient care,” Philip Guarneschelli, president and CEO of UPMC Pinnacle, said in a press release.

The Spring Garden Township hospital will then close its emergency room and all other services at 6 a.m. that Sunday morning and the new UPMC Memorial hospital at 1701 Innovation Drive, will officially open.

The new hospital is twice the size of the former UPMC Memorial with 102 private patient bedrooms on five levels for a total of 220,000 square feet of space. The hospital will provide acute and emergency medical care, maternity services, cardiology and vascular services, chronic disease management and surgical services.

The system also announced on Monday that the UPMC Outpatient Center, located directly next to the new UPMC Memorial, will open on Sept. 9. The outpatient facility is 120,000 square feet and will offer ambulatory surgery, outpatient imaging, a sleep lab, a cancer center, and offices for specialty care providers, community meeting rooms and more.

The entire project cost the system over $300 million.
