Tobacco settlement fund audits released for health care facilities in central Pa.
Listen to this articleThe release of tobacco settlement fund audits for health care facilities in Dauphin and York counties has been announced by Auditor General Timothy DeFoor.
“Our audits ensure hospitals have documentation to support the receipt of tobacco settlement funds before receiving reimbursement for uncompensated care,” DeFoor said in a statement.
Tobacco settlement fund audits for health care facilities in Dauphin County include Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute, and UPMC Pinnacle. In York County, the tobacco settlement fund audit is for UPMC Hanover.
According to a release, the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement reached in 1998 settled state lawsuits brought against tobacco companies to recover costs associated with treating smoking-related illnesses. Per the release, Pennsylvania’s Tobacco Settlement Act allocated some of the billions of dollars in settlement funds to reimburse hospitals for providing care to uninsured patients.
