New structure at Broad Street Market has opened
A new temporary structure at Broad Street Market opened this week.
The structure opened Thursday across from the Stone Building. There are now 24 local vendors in business across market’s two buildings.
“We are thrilled that this day has finally come,” Chair of the Market Eric Hagarty said in a statement. “It has been a true community-driven effort to bring this project to completion, and we could not be more grateful to everyone who has supported the Market’s vendors and patrons as we continue to recover from last July’s devastating fire.”
Most of The Broad Street Market’s local businesses are minority-owned and/or women-owned and provide an array of products for City of Harrisburg residents and the surrounding area.
Founded in 1860, the Broad Street Market is the country’s oldest continuously operated market house. The market serves as the long-time anchor of retail activity in Harrisburg‘s Midtown business corridor, with dozens of vendors providing locally grown and organic produce, meats, baked goods, and freshly prepared meals.
“The opening of the new structure is another step towards a lasting recovery for our community,” said Hagarty.
The opening came a week following the Harrisburg City Council’s 5-2 vote to delay the reconstruction of Broad Street Market’s brick building.
