Millworks in Harrisburg cited $6K for ADA violation
The owner of the Millworks restaurant and brewery in Midtown Harrisburg was slapped with a $6,000 fine for violating the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania said it received a complaint that the farm-to-table restaurant was not accessible to individuals in wheelchairs.
After an investigation, U.S. Attorney David Freed’s office agreed that some architectural barriers in the restaurant’s seating areas and restrooms made it difficult for wheelchair access.
Freed’s office said owner Josh Kesler cooperated fully and quickly fixed the access issues. Kesler said the changes included replacing a few table bases in the dining area to ensure people in wheelchairs have enough knee and leg clearance. In the restrooms, he added battery-operated faucets to sinks for easier use.
He said he thought the restaurant, which opened in 2015, was in full ADA compliance.
“We had full architectural, local and state approval on all aspects prior to opening,” he said. “No submission is required or accepted by the federal government, which can have its own interpretation of compliance.”
He said the changes cost him less than $1,000.
The three-story Millworks is located across from the Broad Street Market on Verbeke Street. The building also is home to about two dozen artist studios and gallery space, as well as a brewery and rooftop biergarten.
Kesler is currently renovating the former Creative Elegance Boutique property at 2129 Market St. in Camp Hill for a new Millworks tasting room.
