The informed the public that a planned and previously anticipated demolition is occurring this week at the site.

The demolition is part of ongoing safety and stabilization efforts.

The work involves the removal of a limited, approximately 30-foot section of an exterior wall located at the southwest corner near Capitol and Verbeke Streets. According to a release, this specific section of wall has been identified by engineers as bowing and sagging, presenting a structural concern that must be addressed proactively to ensure public safety and to support the long-term of the Broad Street Market.

As part of the broader stabilization and plan for the Broad Street Market, the demolition is targeted, intentional, and limited in scope. Per the release, the demolition does not represent a change in direction, nor does it impact the City’s continued commitment to preserving and restoring this historic .

“The safety of residents, visitors, and workers is our top priority,” the City of Harrisburg stated. “Addressing structural issues early and responsibly is essential to protecting the future of the Broad Street Market.”

The City of Harrisburg said additional updates will be shared as stabilization efforts continue.
