Giant began running its Giant Pick Up service through Peapod, an Illinois-based online grocery outlet, in late 2013 at four stores, including its Camp Hill and Susquehanna Township locations. The other two stores are in Montgomery County.
The new fulfillment center at Giant’s Camp Hill location enabled the company to expand the service, officials said. Approximately 50 new jobs have been created, which include personal shoppers and delivery drivers, Giant said in a news release.
Peapod by Giant trucks will make deliveries to more than 60 ZIP codes in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties. Lancaster County deliveries do not include the city of Lancaster.
The service is available for orders of $60 or more, said Chris Brand, Giant spokesman. The cost is $9.95 for orders between $60-$75, $8.95 for orders between $75-$100, and $7.95 for orders of $100 or more. Shoppers log on to www.peapod.com and submit an order to be delivered at an agreed-upon time the following day.
Brand said the Peapod service was first introduced in the Philadelphia area in September 2011, then in the Lehigh Valley market in September 2014. The success in those areas convinced officials to expand the service in the midstate, Brand said, declining to reveal sales data.
“The intention behind it all is to listen to our customers,” Brand said this morning. “We got a lot of feedback from customers saying, ‘We really want delivery.’”
Founded in 1989, Peapod is a wholly owned subsidiary of Netherlands-based grocer Royal Ahold. Giant, based in Middlesex Township, is a division of Ahold USA, which is a subsidiary of Royal Ahold. Peapod is the nation’s leading online grocer, serving 24 U.S. markets in communities in 12 states and the District of Columbia.
Peapod has made more than 30 million deliveries.
