The Quigley Corp. plans to close its hard-candy
manufacturing plant in Elizabethtown
by summer, company officials said today.
All 24 jobs at the 18,800-square-foot plant, which does
business as Simon Candy Co., will be cut, said Albert Piechotta, Quigley’s
executive director of communications.
It also likely will mean the end of the Simon Candy brand,
which began in 1949.
“For many years it has been difficult to make hard candy in
the U.S.
and do it profitably,” Piechotta said. “Unfortunately, we have not been able to
be profitable with that line of business.”
Doylestown-based Quigley manufactures and markets natural
pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter remedies such as Cold-Eeze. Manufacture of
these products will not be affected by the Elizabethtown plant closing.
Quigley is in the process of deciding which product lines and
equipment will be transferred from Elizabethtown
to its larger and more modern Lebanon
facility, Piechotta said.
The company is not planning any further cutbacks, he said.
Shares of The Quigley Corp. are traded on the Nasdaq under
