York craft brewers launch new alliance

The brewers behind York’s growing craft-beer scene have formed a new alliance aimed at bringing more people downtown while giving back to organizations in the White Rose City.

On Saturday the six downtown breweries — Mudhook Brewing Co., Liquid Hero Brewery, Crystal Ball Brewing Co., Collusion Tap Works, Gift Horse Brewing Co. and newcomer Old Forge Brewing Co. — debuted a new alliance, dubbed The York City Six.

Corey Wolfe, who used to manage Mudhook and helped launch the new collaboration, said The York City Six is a brand under which the city’s breweries can work together on marketing efforts and special events, like beer festivals, to attract more people downtown.

It also will be used as a brand name for collaboration beers created by the six breweries — similar to the annual 717 Collaboration Beer made by breweries in the Harrisburg area.

The first special beer — York City Six Vol. 1: Pilsner — was brewed on Saturday at Liquid Hero on East North Street. Wolfe said the plan is to release the collaboration beer in January at each of the brewery taprooms. And $1 from every pint of that beer sold would go toward helping the York City Police Department.

“We want it to benefit the city,” said Wolfe, who now works for the United Way of York County.

Jesse De Salvo, co-owner of Crystal Ball, said he is hoping to see the collaboration beers released more than once a year to support other causes in the city.

“We can use our visibility to help ourselves, York City and a cause,” he said, calling this group effort a natural progression as the craft-beer scene matures in York. “It’s cool to take the knowledge we’ve all gained to carry one collective flag with a common goal.”

If the collaboration is successful, Wolfe and De Salvo believe it may help attract other craft brewers, as well as more restaurants and retailers, to York.

“We would love to have more breweries come in,” Wolfe said, though acknowledging that may change the name of the brand. “I want to do more collaborative things, not only with the brewers but other groups downtown. We want to bring together as many people as possible.”

Over the coming weeks, he said the goal is to get a dedicated website up for the collaboration. A Facebook page was just launched.
