York Country Day School’s (YCDS) Cyber Hounds robotics team will be one of four US teams attending the FIRST Lego League (FLL) International Open Championship in Bath, England this June.

FIRST Lego League is a worldwide program that challenges students in grades four through eight to think like scientists and engineers, build an autonomous robot and help solve real-world problems.

Four years ago, YCDS launched an after-school robotics program; since that time, the program has expanded, providing robotics for all students in kindergarten through grade 12 during the school day in addition to after school offerings. In 2013, the Cyber Hounds robotics team were named grand champions at a local qualifying competition, followed by a third place finish out of 60 teams in the 2014 regional competition at the University of Pennsylvania. Since then, the team has earned commendations each year for their robot design, project research, teamwork and outreach to the community. This year’s team includes eight students in grades six through eight and two student mentors.

Elizabeth Charleston, Middle and Upper School Science Teacher and FIRST Robotics Coordinator, said the team members are excited about representing the greater York area in England.

“This trip will be one of the most important experiences of their lives and will shape their future as leaders in the STEM community in York County,” said Charleston. The YCDS team, coaches, and parents will interact with 100 teams from around the world to exchange ideas, make new friends, and participate in the competition.

To cover expenses for the team’s participation in the competition, YCDS students set a fundraising goal of $20,000. To support the team or learn more about the YCDS Cyber Hounds, please visit www.cyberhoundstobath.com
