York business and cultural trip to Cuba canceled

Not enough interest, organizers say; trip was planned for Nov. 11-19

A planned business and cultural visit to Cuba this month by York County economic leaders has been canceled after not enough people signed up for the trip.

The York County Economic Alliance and Travel Time Travel were to host the would-be Nov. 11-19 tour, which was to visit Cuba’s capital city, Havana, plus historic Old Havana, a banana plantation, Milton Hershey’s sugar plantations and sugar mills and other sites.

But only a year-plus after President Obama re-established diplomatic relations with the island nation, “it just seemed like it was too early in the game” to attempt such a business/cultural trip, and not enough people showed interest, John Bailey, vice president of Travel Time Travel, said Friday.

Once Fidel Castro took power in Cuba nearly 60 years ago, the U.S. and Cuba broke off relations, and a long-standing travel ban kept most Americans from seeing the country.

Despite the cancellation, the trip may still take place sometime in the future, Bailey said.

The trip was to show visitors Cuba as it has been for the past half-century-plus, ever since the U.S. broke off ties and nearly all Americans stopped visiting the island country.
