WellSpan opens $71M rehab and surgery hospital

WellSpan Health today opened its $71 million surgery and rehabilitation hospital in York Township.

The 95,000-square-foot facility has 48 beds for rehabilitation patients and 25 beds for orthopedic patients, along with four operating rooms, according to a news release.

About 150 employees were hired for the opening and about 240 total will be hired by mid-2014, spokesman Barry Sparks said.
WellSpan pursued the operation because the region’s population continues to grow and age, and many people need rehabilitation and orthopedic services, the organization said.

The rehab and surgery center also will open up space and volume capacity at the health system’s York Hospital, allowing it to transition patients more quickly from the emergency department to inpatient beds, according to the release.

The rehabilitation hospital at 55 Monument Road on the Apple Hill Health Campus was built with several energy-saving components, including a white roof, irrigated landscaping to reduce water usage and steam generators.

Construction began in 2010. Kinsley Construction Inc., based in York Township, was the general contractor. Maryland-based Wilmot Sanz Inc. was the architect
