WellSpan Health to provide medical coverage for Special Olympics in York

WellSpan Health will provide medical coverage for Special Olympics PA’s Indoor Winter Games in York March 4 and 5.
WellSpan said through its continued partnership with Special Olympics PA, it will have a team of 30 physicians, athletic trainers and advance practice providers offering medical coverage for the event.
“WellSpan’s Sports Medicine team is excited to support these dedicated and talented athletes as they compete on this stage,” said Dr. John Deitch, vice president and chief medical officer for WellSpan’s Orthopedic Service Line. “The effort they put forth inspires all of us to achieve our own personal best and our WellSpan team is there to help them compete safely and celebrate their successes.”
The Games will feature 500 athletes with 200 coaches supporting them. Events will be held at four locations across the York area, including the York Expo Center, local bowling alleys and ice arena. The Games include ice skating, speed skating, floor hockey, and bowling.
WellSpan began its partnership with Special Olympics PA in 2018 when they held a skating event in York. The Indoor Winter Games event started in 2019 and WellSpan has provided medical care each year the games have been held, according to WellSpan.
The games were cancelled in 2020 and held virtually in 2021 due to the pandemic.
“Special Olympics promotes the best in humanity,” said Dr. Bryan Wexler, a WellSpan emergency physician who served as a Special Olympics coach for many years before he began volunteering as the medical director. “When you see the athletes, and how hard they have worked and trained to be at the events, and how much they put their heart into competing, it makes you want to adopt those attitudes in your own life.”
