WellSpan Health is coming to York’s downtown business district.
Dr. Kevin Mosser, the health system’s president and CEO, said WellSpan plans to open a designated lab services center in the former F.W. Woolworth Department Store building at 46 W. Market St.
The center is expected to open in late July, said Dan Carrigan, a WellSpan spokesman. Staffing levels have not been finalized.
The move follows a request from Family First Health, a federally qualified health center that has six sites in York, Lancaster and Adams counties, Mosser said.
The clinic’s primary care patients in York, he said, often have trouble finding lab services, which are mostly located outside the city.
The downtown lab center also will provide access for others who live and work in the area, including those occupying the Revi Flats development along West Market Street. Undertaken by developer RSDC, Revi Flats includes creation of 18 apartments in the Woolworth building.
Carrigan said the WellSpan center will include four lab collection rooms, a laboratory and a community education room that could host speakers and workshops on health-related topics.
Twenty-six parking spaces are available behind the building at a cost of $1 per hour.
Initially, the Revi Flats project was designed to include three retail spaces in the Woolworth building, said Dylan Bauer, president of development for RSDC. Instead WellSpan will be occupying the entire 2,910 square-foot space. The Revi Flats project was made possible with help from the New Markets Tax Credit, a federal program that offers financial incentives for developments in low-income areas.
WellSpan’s lab locations like one at Apple Hill Medical Center in York Township, offer laboratory services, including testing for: blood and urine, pre-admission, outpatient surgery and glucose tolerance.
WellSpan also has a community health center at 605 S. George St. in the city.
