In recognition of the affiliation that happened in October 2013, Ephrata Community Hospital is becoming WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital.

The organizations announced the brand alignment this morning, saying the hospital will transition to its new identity during the next several months. The new system identity will also roll out in various ways across the organization’s outpatient centers, physician practices, home health program and other services in Lancaster County.

John M. Porter Jr., a senior vice president with WellSpan Health and president of WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital, noted that WellSpan has already begun to expand services in northern Lancaster County by opening the WellSpan Maternal Fetal Medicine practice in West Earl Township in February.

When we officially came together on Oct. 1, Ephrata Community Hospital gained strength through a larger organization that offers, among many things, the largest physician network in southcentral Pennsylvania,” he said. “Similarly, WellSpan gained a respected institution that is a proven health care leader in Lancaster County.”

The organizations reiterated their goals for the affiliation:

• Improve health care across Central Pennsylvania while enhancing local systems of care in northern Lancaster County, Adams County and York County.

• Maintain existing relationships and clinical partnerships with other local health care providers.

• Enhance a model of care that is based on an individual’s relationship with a primary care physician who coordinates all the care an individual requires across the lifespan.

• Offer stronger medical, nursing and allied health educational resources to address a projected shortage of physicians and health care professionals.

Both organizations are nonprofits and WellSpan, which is based in York, announced in February that it is exploring a similar affiliation with the nonprofit Good Samaritan Health System in Lebanon County.
