Weis Markets has entered into a deal with Mars Super Markets Inc. to purchase five Mars stores in Baltimore County, Md.
Under the deal announced Tuesday, Sunbury-based Weis will acquire two stores in Dundalk, Md. as well as individual units in the communities of Essex, Arbutus and Carney.
Officials did not disclose a price for the transaction, which is expected to be completed in late July. Once that happens, Weis will operate nine Baltimore County stores, essentially doubling its footprint in the region. The chain already has two locations in Perry Hall, plus stores in Towson and Woodlawn.
“This is an important acquisition for us as we’ve been steadily expanding within Baltimore County in recent years,” Chairman and CEO Jonathan Weis said.
The 104-year-old Weis organization operates 162 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and West Virginia.
“We have great respect for Mars, the D’Anna family and their associates who have long-served the public as a locally-focused food retailer,” Weis added. “These are successful, well-run stores and we look forward to interviewing the associates of these stores for employment with our company.”
Headquartered in Rosedale, Md., Mars was founded in 1943 by Joseph D’Anna, and operates 13 locations in the greater Baltimore area.
“As a family-owned business, we recognize Weis Markets as a company with a similar commitment to its communities, customers and associates,” Mars Chairman and CEO Chris D’Anna said. “This was an extremely important consideration in our decision.”
