Weis Q1 earnings decline 32 percent

Weis Markets Inc. reported first-quarter earnings of $9.1
million, down from $13.4 million in the same period last year.

Weis Markets Inc. reported first-quarter earnings of $9.1
million, down from $13.4 million in the same period last year.

Earnings per share for the 13-week period that ended March
29 were 34 cents, down from 50 cents per share in the year-ago period,
according to the Sunbury-based grocery-store chain. Comparable-store sales, or
sales at stores open for at least a year, were up 3.9 percent from the year-ago
quarter.

The earnings were hurt by wholesale-food inflation, a more than 35 percent increase in diesel-fuel
costs and a more than 18 percent increase in health-insurance costs, according
to a company statement.

Weis operates more than 30 grocery stores in Central Pennsylvania. Shares of Weis trade on the New
York Stock Exchange
under the ticker symbol WMK.
