Volvo Construction Equipment moving sales HQ to Shippensburg

Volvo Construction Equipment, the Swedish manufacturer of heavy trucks and equipment for infrastructure building, today said it will spend $100 million to expand production at its Shippensburg factory and move its North American sales headquarters there.

Volvo will start production of its wheel loaders, excavators and articulated haulers at the facility over the next couple years, according to the company.

The company also plans to move its sales headquarters and Volvo Rents operations from Asheville, N.C., by September 2012, it said. In North Carolina, Volvo employs about 220 people, who will be given the opportunity to relocate to Central Pennsylvania, the company said.

Company representatives were not immediately available to comment on the plans.
Volvo acquired the Shippensburg facility in 2007 and last year completed a $30 million, 200,000-square-foot expansion of the plant. Over the summer, the company was looking for additional workers to meet expected production growth at the facility.
