UPMC Pinnacle plans to end its contract with Sodexo Inc. and begin using Aramark Corp. for food and environmental services at all of its hospital locations, with the exception of UPMC Pinnacle Hanover.
According to a UPMC Pinnacle spokesperson, employees of Sodexo will be given the option to transfer to Aramark under the new contract, which takes effect April 1.
“Active employees in good standing at the time of the transaction’s close will receive an offer of employment,” according a statement from the spokesperson. “Those details and opportunities are being communicated directly to affected employees.”
The contract switch was the result of a request for proposals issued by UPMC Pinnacle, which added: “Our current vendors have been great partners, and we thank them for their support and services.”
A representative from Sodexo deferred all questions of future employment to UPMC Pinnacle, but offered the assurance “ employees in this industry are typically retained.”
“We are proud to have the opportunity to serve UPMC Pinnacle and look forward to a strong partnership,” said Chris Collom, spokesperson for Aramark, who added “we will be inviting all employees of UPMC’s previous partner to apply for positions with Aramark.“
As exiting contractors sometimes do, however, Sodexo filed formal layoff notices for 462 employees at multiple UPMC Pinnacle locations with the Department of Labor and Industry under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN, Act. Those locations include UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg, UPMC Polyclinic in Harrisburg, the UPMC Pinnacle Community Osteopathic campus in Lower Paxton township, and the UPMC Pinnacle West Shore hospital in Hampden township.
