U.S. News ranks Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital among best in nation

U.S. News & World Report has ranked Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital among the best in the nation for eight medical specialties, the magazine announced today.

According to a news release, the honor marks the fifth consecutive year in which Penn State Hershey has appeared in the Best Children’s Hospitals rankings in multiple specialties.

Its national rankings include cancer, 24th; cardiology and heart surgery, 37th; gastroenterology and GI surgery, 33rd; nephrology, 43rd; neurology and neurosurgery, 44th; orthopedics, 27th; pulmonology, 30th; and urology, 15th.

Eight specialties were the most in which it has been recognized, PSH said.

U.S. News collected clinical data from a detailed questionnaire sent to 184 pediatric hospitals, relying on patient outcomes and care-related resources as well as annual surveys of pediatric specialists and subspecialists who were asked where they would send the sickest children in their specialty.

“This national recognition is a testament to the unparalleled care and support our physicians, nurses, clinical specialists and other staff provide for children and families every day,” said Dr. Craig Hillemeier, dean of the Penn State College of Medicine and CEO of Penn State Hershey. “The U.S. News rankings reinforce for our community that Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital is among the best when it comes to offering a full spectrum of high-level pediatric care, and we do it right here in central Pennsylvania.”

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia ranked second in the nation overall, and Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC ranked eighth.

PSHCH is “the only children’s hospital between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia fully equipped to treat the most severely ill children of central Pennsylvania,” the system said.

U.S. News introduced the Best Children’s Hospitals rankings in 2007 to help families of sick children find the best medical care available, especially for complex conditions. The rankings offer families an array of detailed information about each hospital’s performance.
