U-Gro wrapping up $6M expansion in Derry Township

A Dauphin County early-childhood daycare and preschool provider is wrapping up a $6 million expansion project in the Hershey area.

Swatara Township-based U-Gro Learning Centres Inc. today opened the first part of a two-story addition at its Derry Township facility off Route 322. The addition includes eight new preschool classrooms.

U-Gro expects the second piece of the expansion project — a new training center for teachers and support staff — will be completed in July. The project began last fall.

As part of the addition, U-Gro will be moving its support staff from a facility in Swatara Township to Derry Township, as well as adding more than 25 new jobs.

In total, the construction project adds 31,000 square feet to a facility that was originally 16,000 square feet. Once the work ends, U-Gro will begin a separate project renovating space in the original part of the building to exclusively serve infants and toddlers.

“This major expansion project reflects U-Gro’s commitment to the families and community that rely on our preschool programs,” said Greg Holsinger, president and CEO. “In addition to providing a quality pre-K education to more children in the Hershey area, the relocation of our staff support center and dedicated training facilities for U-Gro teachers will help us continue to help the children of Central Pennsylvania reach their full potential.”

U-Gro operates 12 centers in the midstate, with locations in Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties. The company serves more than 1,500 children daily.
