North Carolina-based Tanger Factory Outlet Centers Inc., which has shopping centers in Dauphin and Lancaster counties, will begin accepting credit cards from Chinese bank-card provider China UnionPay at several of its properties, including the Hershey outlets.
UnionPay is a major player in China, and Tanger has seen an increase in shoppers from China, Korea and Japan.
“We are constantly seeking new ways to accommodate this growing consumer group seeking luxury goods from top brands at a great price,” Steven Tanger, the company’s president and CEO, said in a statement.
The move should be especially beneficial for the Hershey outlets, as The Hershey Co. and the Hershey Harrisburg Regional Visitors Bureau have been focusing more on international growth, most notably in China.
UnionPay was a topic of discussion for the visitors bureau as it rolled out a strategic plans to grow Dauphin County tourism back in March.
The bureau reported that China was the top international market for consumer spending during the last two years in Dauphin County, based on Visa credit card consumer reports.
With the announcement, Tanger is offering VIP coupon books to all China UnionPay cardholders. The UnionPay program is in place at 12 outlet centers. Tanger’s Lancaster County outlets were not included.
The company owns 46 outlet centers in 24 states. It trades its shares on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol SKT.
