The Pittsburgh Steelers did bring home a win this past weekend, just not on the football field. Their namesake roller coaster, The Steel Curtain, has earned the Golden Ticket Award for Best New Roller Coaster of 2019.
Kennywood’s Steel Curtain was named the Best New Roller Coaster this past weekend at the 2019 Golden Ticket Award Ceremonies, held at Silverwood Theme Park in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Organized by industry publication Amusement Today, voters from around the world chose the record-setting coaster collaboration between Kennywood and the NFL’s Steelers as their favorite new ride of the year.
Steel Curtain set a North American record for most inversions (nine), including the world’s tallest inversion (197 feet), when it opened in July. It is also Pennsylvania’s tallest roller coaster at 220 feet tall, hitting a top speed of 75 miles per hour as it zooms across 4,000 feet of track. It is the flagship attraction of the forthcoming Steelers Country at Kennywood themed land, including interactive games, retail and dining experiences designed to bring fans “onto the field” in a way never seen before.
Kennywood’s newest ride was not the only attraction in the spotlight at the Golden Ticket Awards. After nine straight years of winning for Best Funhouse/Walkthrough Attraction, Noah’s Ark was recognized as a legend within its category and the industry as a whole.
Finally, fresh off making USA TODAY’s list of 10 Best Halloween Theme Park Events, Kennywood’s Phantom Fright Nights was also a finalist at the ceremonies for Best Halloween Event. Phantom Fright Nights returns on Friday, September 27.
In addition to Kennywood, Amusement Today also honored Dutch Wonderland with the Golden Ticket for Best Family Park.
